As Toni Braxton appeared on the "Boomerang" soundtrack, a career startet that the R&B diva herself, born on October 7, 1967, did not believe to become true. With more than 15 million sold CDs worldwide she established herself as a hitmaker in music business.
The basis for her fantastic voice put her already as child when she sang regulary in the choir of her father's church. His faith was so strong that he forbade Toni to hear any kind of popular music. She also was not allowed to wear pants or makeup. Although she was not allowed she often saw Soul Train or other shows on TV which had a great influence on Toni. She and three of her sisters performed as "The Braxtons" and published the single "The Good Life". Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and Antonio "L.A." Reid had a look on this an took Toni to their label LaFace Records in 1991.
So Toni stopped study teacher and slipped in to the project "Boomerang" because of a pregnant Anita Baker. The singles she produced for this film ("Give U My Heart" and "Love Shoulda Brought You Home") had a great start, and went top quickly. Her debut "Toni Braxton" sold over 7.000.000 copies and Toni got three Grammy Awards, three American Music Awards and two Soul Train Awards. Toni also appeared on the "Waiting to Exhale" soundtrack with the single "Let It Flow". Her sophomore album "Secrets" was produced over 18 months and presents a changed Toni. Songs like "You're Makin' Me High" showed her in a more modern, faster way but "I Don"t Want To" remembers of lyrical joys such as "Another Sad Love Song".
As a result of difficulties with her label LaFace Records, Toni filed for bankruptcy in January 1998, because she was more than 1 million dollars in debt. As she did not wanted to make a new album in the very near future, Toni looked around to make something else than beeing lazy. So she discovered her as an actress and played the "Belle" in the broadway musical "beauty and the beast" since September 1, 1998. The song "A Change In Me" was specially written and included for Toni.
Since December 1998 it's rumored Toni and LaFace Records work together for her third album. In August Arista published the release date: 23rd of November 1999. But it was pushed back to April 25th 2000.
